Watch Video on YouTube: LMRP Lower Marine Riser Package placed over top of well

NEW ORLEANS (Hollywood Backstage) - In the above video you can see BP oil spill top hat caps well. They placed the containment dome successfully on the top of the leaking oil pipe which was cut off by giant shears earlier today. The dome now will funnel some of the oil to a containment ship on the surface. BP is hoping that hydrates will not form in the pipe which brings the oil to the surface. They are pumping methanol to the dome to prevent the pipe from getting blocked. The spill has been capped.

Release date: 04 June 2010 BP announced today that oil and gas is being received onboard the Discoverer Enterprise following the successful placement of a containment cap on top of the Deepwater Horizon's failed blow-out preventer (BOP). This follows the cutting and removal of the riser pipe from the top of the BOP's lower marine riser package (LMRP). It is expected to take one or more days for flow rates of oil and gas to stabilize and it is not possible at this stage to estimate how much oil and gas will be captured by this containment system. All of these operations are complex, involve risks and uncertainties, and have to be carried out by remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) at 5,000 feet under water. Systems such as the LMRP containment cap never before have been deployed at these depths and conditions. The containment system's efficiency, continued operation, and ability to contain the oil and gas cannot be assured. Preparations continue for the planned enhancements to the containment system as announced on June 1. Work continues on the first relief well, which started on May 2, and the second relief well, which started on May 16. Both wells are still estimated to take around three months to complete from commencement of drilling.

Janet Napolitano and Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen have sent this letter (Emergency Fund Letter) requesting additional action by congress to fund the continuing relief operations.

Oil Spill is now gushing at least twice as much as last week after the riser pipe has been cut off. The enormous oil pipe is wide open and the oil is blasting out , making the dispersant pipe look tiny in comparison.

Scientists from the NOAA estimated that cutting the pipe would only increase the flow about 20%. Clearly, they are wrong again. The pipe is gushing so much oil that it appears to engulf the entire area of the camera.

BP is struggling to get a containment cap positioned over the oil leak, but they have not even prepared a pipe that will take the oil away. The only pipe is a distribution pipe to the cap which will bring methanol down to the well opening and break up the crystals which form to block the flow of oil.

The frantic work of the Remote Operated Vehicles is frustratingly slow and complex. Just grabbing hold of a tool is an exercise in futility. The giant claw shears were used to cut the pipe above the blowout preventer (BOP). Now, the opening is a huge gusher of oil.

They may place the cap over the pipe soon. But that will only contain a portion of oil. Most of it will be flowing into the ocean until August, maybe longer. It appears a few Shrimp and Eels don't seem to mind the oil. They can be seen swimming past the gigantic damaged pipe regularly.

The trick is going to be getting the modified top hat over the well without plugging the top or tangling the lines. How many ROVs does it take to screw in a light bulb?
