NEW ORLEANS (Hollywood Backstage) - In Sarah Palin's infamous campaign she gleamed wildly into the camera (ok, her eyes gleamed) and said "Drill Baby Drill." That image was a little frightening, but not as frightening as the sight of an oil rig blowing up in the ocean and killing 11 people.
Now, the fallout is a very large gob of oil sitting in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico and drifting to the shores of the United States. It wouldn't be much better in Alaska or anywhere else for that matter.
The fact is oil spills can kill a lot of birds and mammals and fish. From a business perspective alone, it's bad for the fishing industry. In case you're a Republican, a bird is not a mammal.
President Barack Obama recently threw open a huge swath of East Coast waters and other protected areas in Alaska and the Gulf of Mexico to drilling. In light of recent events, that may change the political landscape. It looks like the environmental landscape will be changing as well.
