NEW ORLEANS (Hollywood Backstage) - Video of the controlled burn can be seen here. The video above shows the United States Coast Guard test burn of the oil slick which has appeared on the surface of the ocean after a massive oil leak in the Deepwater Horizon oil well explosion which left 11 people dead.
The United States Coast Guard continues to work with British Petroleum and Transocean LTD in their attempts to seal off the leak. That is the best way to stop the damage. They are also trying to minimize the effects of the oil on the environment.
One way is to burn the oil from the surface of the ocean. This test was considered successful, but it has never been tried on a spill of this scale, this far in open ocean.
The fireproof boom is towed around the oil slick and moved out to sea where it is set on fire by flares. The controlled burn can be put out at any time by releasing the boom. The oil will spread out very thin and the fire will extinguish itself.
