Franken Clearly Against Oil Spills

WASHINGTON (Hollywood Backstage) - In the above video, Minnesota Senator Al Franken argues about the BP Oil Spill with Jack Coleman, Energy North America, Founding Partner, and about the need for a six month moratorium on offshore oil drilling. Franken is against oil spills. Who isn't? Their are some who still believe oil spills are worth the risk.

They say timing is everything. In a Senate Hearing discussing oil drilling and legal liability Senator Al Franken asks Jack Coleman about the BP Oil Spill and the moratorium on deep water drilling. Jack Coleman says that if the oil companies were held completely liable for the monetary legal damages that might occur in an oil spill that they cause, than no oil company would be willing to accept that risk and there would be no offshore drilling at all -- an "amazing" argument -- perhaps best left for a time when the oil has stopped gushing.

BP's profit in the first quarter of 2010 was $5.6 billion dollars.

It doesn't make sense that oil companies should be allowed to drill if they will not accept the financial risk of doing so.

Senator Franken's position is clear. He is standing up for the moratorium on offshore drilling.

"Conservatives protect and defend the Constitution"
Oh, you mean like the "conservatives" who created the "Patriot" Act that suspended important parts of the Constitution? Or the "conservatives" who believe in institutionalized discrimination, thus spitting in the eye of "all men are created equal"? Or the "conservatives" on the Supreme Court who just gave carte blanche to big business to unduly influence federal elections?

Al Franken has not been in congress too long, for some. He is the truth, straight talk, for the people candidate and he is hitting the Senate floor like a scene from "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington."

Senator Franken: "What current condition are referenced here that cause of deep water drilling to pose an unacceptable threat. What is an unacceptable threat? Is the fact that many thousands of deep water wells have been drilled before have.. and so you're speaking exactly to that! And what I'm asking you, is BP with what we've just seen here, such an outlier that we shouldn't have a six month moratorium?"

Jack Coleman: "That is exactly what I was discussing. Senator, you're exactly right."

Senator Franken: "You just said you weren't discussing it."

Jack Coleman: "Well, I did not discuss exactly what happened with BP, but it is an aberration. And that is the point.."

Senator Franken: "It's an aberration. Let me ask you this. If eight weeks ago, someone had said, we should put a moratorium on deep water drilling, would you have said yes?"

Jack Coleman: "I would absolutely say no. And I still say no because -- "

Senator Franken: "Have you been looking at what's happening to your beloved coast?"

Jack Coleman: "I absolutely have, but what we have -- "

Senator Franken: "So in retrospect, you would not have stopped that drilling."
